Bloodborne video game film adaptation announced with YouTuber Jacksepticeye
Sony/FromSoftwareHit video game Bloodborne is being developed into an animated film co-produced by YouTube star Jacksepticeye.
The 2015 PlayStation exclusive is one of the most celebrated games of all time, but has never received a sequel despite fan demand.
While plot details and a release date remain under wraps, the film will be developed by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, who say the adaption will be true to the spirit of the game.
The news was confirmed at this year's CinemaCon, which brings together studios and cinema executives for a sneak peek at upcoming productions.
The annual event kicked off in Las Vegas on Monday.
Attendees were also treated to Tom Holland in hologram form presenting a fresh clip of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, as well as a first look at The Social Reckoning, the highly-anticipated sequel to the acclaimed 2010 film The Social Network.
Bloodborne, from legendary Japanese developer FromSoftware, built on the studio's successful Dark Souls series, famed for its punishing, strategic combat encounters.
The emphasis on skillful play and Bloodborne's gothic, Victorian setting made it an instant favourite with critics, and it's widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time.
Since its release, Bloodborne has taken on an almost mythical status among players, who have been clamouring for a sequel or remake.
Sony/FromSoftwareBut FromSoftware has instead focused on producing other titles such as Elden Ring, which is also being adapted into a film.
Projects in development don't always make it to the screen and video game adaptions in the past have sometimes failed to meet the mark for fans and critics.
Jacksepticeye, real name Seán McLoughlin, found fame as a YouTuber but has recently been making moves into acting.
He had a cameo in Iron Lung, the smash-hit horror film self-financed, filmed and directed by fellow social media star Markiplier.
And he also voiced Punch Up, a pint-sized supervillain, in last year's critically acclaimed video game Dispatch.
McLoughlin reshared a post to his Instagram story which spoke of his excitement at being involved with the adaptation.
"I am going to do everything in my power to make this the best Bloodborne adaptation possible," he said.
